About this role

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is the nonprofit applied research division of Georgia Tech, with over 2,900 employees performing $940 million in research annually for government and industry. The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports DoW systems in avionics, electronic warfare, and autonomous systems. As Branch Head, lead multiple sponsored research projects and manage a branch of 7-15 FTE.

Define and design military avionic systems and systems-of-systems, developing integrated system-level designs and hardware/software subsystems. Provide technical leadership through the full development lifecycle from requirements to delivery. Utilize Model Based Systems Engineering, laboratory analysis hardware, software development environments, and Agile methodologies.

SID engineering roles encompass Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering. Coordinate with division leadership and support Monthly Project Status Review meetings. The team specializes in tactical communication, intelligence systems, and training solutions.

Pursue new research opportunities, lead white papers and proposals, and support business development presentations and travel. Ensure branch innovation through internal R&D funding. Align with Georgia Tech's mission to develop leaders advancing technology for the public good.

Requirements

  • Recognized subject matter expert in avionics engineering
  • Experience defining and designing military avionic systems and systems-of-systems
  • Ability to develop integrated system-level designs and hardware/software subsystems
  • Proficiency in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Expertise with laboratory analysis hardware and software development environments
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies
  • Proven technical leadership through full development lifecycle
  • Background supporting systems integration for DoW in avionics or electronic warfare

Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple sponsored research projects
  • Manage branch administrative activities including hiring, appraisals, and sponsored project success
  • Serve as recognized SME in avionics domain; lead or contribute to white papers and proposals
  • Seek out and respond to opportunities for new research
  • Lead branch hiring activities including position vacancy announcements, resume reviews, interviews, and onboarding
  • Determine branch hiring needs and lead manpower planning
  • Conduct staff appraisals
  • Support Monthly Project Status Review meetings and coordinate with division leadership
