ABL Space Systems

Senior Turbomachinery Engineer

1w

ABL Space Systems

El Segundo, US · Full-time · $175,000 – $225,000

About this role

ABL Space Systems was founded in 2017 by veterans of SpaceX and Morgan Stanley to develop low-cost launch vehicles for the small satellite industry. As a Senior Turbomachinery Engineer, you will design, analyze, and test turbomachinery. You will drive turbopump design and development from concept through flight.

You will take deep ownership of turbomachinery from design to flight, including collaboration with the manufacturing team for producibility and scale to production. Work with test sites for development and qualification of turbomachinery. Solve complex problems in hydrodynamic and aerodynamic design of pumps and turbines for high power density machines.

Join an ambitious team with big goals in a fast-paced environment. Share passion for developing spaceflight propulsion systems and turbomachines. Support all ABL test sites as required, with travel up to 20% of the year.

ABL engineers demonstrate critical thinking to understand the why behind design decisions and test outcomes. Deal with ambiguity by defining your own pathway to objectives. Deliver end-to-end ownership for projects fully complete and ready for flight.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of turbomachinery product lifecycle development experience
  • Experience in liquid rocket turbomachinery
  • Experience taking a product through a full development cycle from concept to delivery
  • Design and test experience of rotating machinery
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Physics from an accredited university

Responsibilities

  • Take deep ownership of turbomachinery from design to flight
  • Develop and qualify turbomachinery for liquid rocket engines
  • Perform hydrodynamic and/or aerodynamic design of pumps/turbines for high power density machines
  • Design turbopump mechanical elements such as mechanical seals, cryogenic bearings, secondary flows, and rotor thrust control features
  • Conduct structural and modal analysis of stationary and rotating components including basic static structural, LCF, and HCF
  • Apply basic fundamentals of rotordynamics
  • Perform mechanical design of additive manufactured housings and high precision rotating parts with detailed drawings and basic GD&T
  • Provide manufacturing and build support as required

Benefits

  • Work primarily in an office environment
  • Travel to various ABL sites to support testing, launching, and refurbishment (20% of the year)
